JUTC Chairman Murdered
Friday June 27, 2008

JUTC Chairman, Douglas Chambers was murdered sometime after 5pm today.

Mr. Chambers was shot outiside of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC)'s Spanish Town depot as he went to the gate to buy cigarettes. He was, while there, approached by a group of gunmen who opened fire on him. He died on the spot. Mr. Chambers had taken a break from a meeting with representatives of the University and Allied Workers Union, (UAWU) and his chaired company, JUTC.

His killing comes just weeks after some 250 workers were suddenly made redundant, and 400 jobs were to have been cut. Since the mass redundancy, there have been threats of shooting Mr. Chambers, however the police has still not established a motive for the killing. This murder adds to the over 800 year-to-date homicides on the island, most are shootings.

The new Jamaica Labour Party administration appointed Mr. Chambers as chairman in October 2007, since the company had been losing as much as $100 million a month. For his job as chairman, he earned $1 annually. Chambers, who was a chartered accountant, took leave from his accounting firm Chambers, Henry and Partners to make the JUTC more profitable.

Chambers attended Kingston College, FVPT High School, now the St. Maarten Academy, and St. George's College. Mr Chambers' immediate family includes his wife and two young daughters. He was forty-two (42).
